I'm so glad all the bawwww cry moar entitlement people are done, now. It's like they think they own the internet, and everything that gets posted on the internet is THEIRS FOR THE TAKING who cares if it's against the fanartist's wishes? THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT IT ON MY INTERNETZ.

I can objectively see both points, here. Sure, an icon is just 100x100 pixels, and most Japanese fanartists (which is mainly what we're talking about here) don't go looking all over LJ for their art, so what's the harm. They're not losing money or sleep over it, so neither should you, right?

On the other hand, parading around with a picture, icon or whatever is just an amoral thing to do. If you don't know the source, you don't know if the author requested you leave it alone, and if you do know and don't credit, you're an asshole. Sure, you get to walk around with a pretty icon, but if you can't summon the respect for the artist who made the picture enough to even credit or find the source, you don't deserve the image, fanart or not.

Besides, if you paint it off mockingly as 'oh, it's just fanart', then use official art, dumbasses.

Then you're probably finding arts through browsing sites yourself, and thus you know the source and you can credit. It's not rocket science.

push the mail button and write in simple English about how you really want to icon xxx character in the owner's gallery is a really nice thing to do. It won't hurt to spend less than 10 minutes, Jeebus!

How about I don't (not like I can anyway, I get all my stuff off of 4chan), I continue to post my delicious fanart icons, and we all move on with our lives instead?

haloradio is a good example of a person who post the art in her journal first then ask her friends about the source then iconize it. idk, I'm tired of this kind of argument (especially the baawww and the cry moar comments), just move on with our lives kk? Taking credit for work you did using someone else's, and not crediting the original artist, is stupid. It's not that hard ot ask for a source or go find fanart on the JP sites yourself.

That kind of irreverent laziness makes your fanart icons less "delicious" and more "tastes like canned dog shit". =D

I dunno, I'm kind of... shocked that so many people have such entitlement over fanart that it would evoke such a cry of 'CRY MOAR' outrage, like what we're expecting from them is totally outrageous!!!111, when basically it just means they're too lazy/disrespectful to be bothered to find the original source.
