Oh I totally agree. Not sure why this is a secret? I'm pretty sure it is canon that he had some sort of affection for him. Though at the same time, he's quick to want to get rid of him once Luke is in the picture as an undamaged apprentice. So the affection doesn't go that far. But I do think there is a bit of a parent/child thing going on between them.

I... really didn't see anything of the sort in this scene. If anything, it struck me as showing Palpatine to be GLAD of Anakin's injuries, because now he can exploit Anakin even more and make him completely Dark.

I see Palpatine's "affection" for Anakin the same way a child has affection for a favorite toy. They're special and unique to them. But kids also like to break their toys and twist them too.

See I see it more like an abusive parent. There is genuine affection, but there is also the sense that Anakin is only important to Palpatine when he's useful.

I don't quite agree because I find that Palpatine seems to take joy out of Anakin's pain. It amuses him. And even abusive parents don't usually feel that way.

Honestly, the relationship has a creepy (though nonsexual) "child-grooming" quality to it -- where Palpatine tries to position himself as Anakin's confidant and draw him away from anyone else who cares about him, all the while promising him things and telling him how great and wonderful he is.

It doesn't help that they met when Anakin was 9, either.

He "cared" because Anakin was basically his creation and he wanted to make sure his creation was still useable. As for actually loving him in anyway? No.

There has to be some sort of feeling, because Palps would have had no hesitation in kicking the burning remains of any of his other apprentices into the lava pit and then moving onto the next sucker to fall for his act. Then again, Anakin and the Troopers did just liquidate pretty much all of the other potential candidates for a generation (unless you count Tarkin, who is supposedly a sorta Sith potential) so it might be lack of other opportunities.
