I just…can't agree. I mean, my cousin is objectively a very handsome man. But it squicks me the hell out to imagine being attracted to him (I grew up in the West where relationships between cousins is taboo -- not trying to judge other cultures here). And I didn't grow up close to him either -- I saw him once when I was 8. Then later at age 18. And then more recently a few months ago. Each time we spent less than a week together.

I mean, I could see her thinking Steve is good-looking, admiring him.

But wanting to bang him?

"Oh hey, you made out with my aunt and totally wanted to put your penis inside her. I'd like your penis inside me! Yay!"

ew ew ew ew ew ew ew

Sorry, that's just my visceral reaction.

Seriously, I feel like thinking that he was dead would short-circuit a lot of that - that he was just this figure from the past, not a living breathing human being. It's not hard for me to imagine those associations wouldn't necessarily come into Sharon's mind if she was actually meeting Steve.

Less seriously... I mean, I still feel like it's Captain America. It's Captain America!

Like I mentioned above with the "man your aunt loved who re-appeared after a 25 year disappearance" it still doesn't work for me. Particularly because Peggy's still ALIVE and Steve goes to see her.

I mean, can you imagine: Steve goes to visit Peggy while he's banging her niece? Or Peggy dies and then right after Steve shacks up with Sharon?

Nope. DO NOT WANT.

Plus, the "it's Captain America!" thing bothers me because that makes it sound like Sharon is only ever going to see Cap and not Steve as his own person.

To be clear when I see that I mean Steve Rogers/Captain America as a whole person, not just as Cap.

Re: the other thing, I mean, if it doesn't work for you it doesn't work for me. It just feels different to me than people are talking about it I guess.

I guess I just want to explain why it bothers me.

I've heard people get called misogynists for being creeped out by it.

I agree in the sense that I can understand Steve being attracted to her and maybe thinking of a relationship with her. He doesn't know she's related to Peggy and given that she probably has some features similar to Peggy, there's a good chance she would fall into his "type" (if he has one).

But on Sharon's end, she's not a random stranger and I just can't wrap my head around how she could justify it to herself that it's okay to go after the guy her bedridden, Alzheimer's riddled aunt was in love with.

If it works for you, that's fine. Just…I've already seen people attacked about this issue already. And I don't think it's fair to label those who find Steve/Sharon creepy as misogynists.

SA -- not that you called anyone a misogynist, just that I've seen it happen which is why I'm kind of defensive about this

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that's more than fair. I haven't seen that myself but it would be ludicrous to say that disliking the ship makes you a misogynist. I mean that is... ridiculous.

*laughs* Oh hey, I've seen that argument for making incest legal! Funny how that works!

(Not that this is actual incest, since Steve doesn't seem to be in a role of power over her, so much? But it seems to inhabit some of the same squicky territory.)

You seem weirdly hung up on this "It's Captain America!" thing, whereas that would make it even worse from Sharon's side in my book. If I were her, there'd be this doubly creepy thing of he's definitely this old-old dead guy from my aunt's past who's famous that I've heard a million epic stories about. I'd be even less inclined to want sex with a dusty icon of a by-gone era who was completely out of step with my world. He belongs in my aunt's generation. Look! Here's a b&w film reel about him to seal the deal!

All of that's true, but at the same time, have I pointed out that this is Captain America we're talking about here
