I dunno. I basically love writing about old people who kick ass. No one ever expects the 68 year old at the DMV to be ex CIA.

Old badasses are so cool, as are old protags in general. Got any recs?

TV not fic, but Battlestar Galactica has Bill Adama as the main military commander and Laura Roslin as the main civilian commander. They're both in their 50s approximately. And there's also Saul Tigh and Tom Zarek who are older.

Also, I always assume people have watched it already, but ATLA and LoK have a bunch of cool, badass older folks.

Haven't seen LoK, but ATLA, the older folks still tended to be mentor and teacher types. (Which makes sense; it's a show for kids after all.) I think my favorite episode was the one following the characters in their ordinary lives; Iroh's segment was so sad!

Hmmm, might be worth checking out BSG, though.

Yeah, figured it was worth mentioning because - even though they're mentors - at least they're not Wise Old Mentors (TM) who die off at the end... which is kind of a sad, low bar to jump over.

But yeah, BSG is awesome. Fourth season ends up jumping the shark a little. Well, some people hate the entire fourth season. I loved it right up until the very last episode. The last episode is rather terrible and retroactively degrades some awesome stuff that happened in previous episodes, but I still love the series as a whole.

Oh! And I forgot another character, Saul's wife, Ellen Tigh. So at least five characters all in their 50s. All with their own personalities/subplots/etc. And then also love lives! Just because they are old and have wrinkles, the show isn't like "eww old people." Granted, their relationships are mostly with each other because they are the main characters, but yeah. It's still awesome.

Hmmm. Is the fourth season okay to skip? Or does that just end really badly, storywise?

Oh, fourth season is the last season of the show. And like I said, I actually loved most of the fourth season other than the last episode, so... fiction is subjective. *shrugs*

Er, I meant like, could the show be as satisfying ending with the third season?

Oh! Gotcha!

Umm... maybe not really? They decide to end the third season on a cliffhanger.

I think first, second, and third season finales are all cliffhangers. The bastards.

DAMMIT! *shakes fist*

Trollhunter (Norwegian movie, available with subs) has just about the most awesome old dude protagonist of all time.

Trollhunter, huh? Is it more fantasy, or more horror?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-23 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Fantasy. It has one or two horror moments/scenes that are tense but not horrifying. The rest is action.

I recall you aren't a fan of horror, so I wouldn't rec anything that was gory or overly disturbing, and this movie is neither.

Thanks! I appreciate your consideration. Might have to chase this down.

(Though actually, we DO enjoy psychological horror. It's jump-scares and gore we don't like.)

Gotcha. I'll keep that in mind for future recs.
