(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 04:27 am (UTC)(link)Not enjoying or being convinced by advertising doesn't make someone a dick. You might arguably say that expressing this opinion is slightly dickish, but frankly, if I were someone who wanted people to read my work and my own efforts were sabotaging this goal, I'd want to know so I could find more effective ways of reaching a potential audience.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)Exactly this.
Successful self-promotion that doesn't piss your audience off is an art in and of itself. There's a reason a lot of people pass of the marketing of their work to someone else who have a better understanding of what they're doing. I know I would if I could afford it.
Building up a genuine and sincere relationship with your audience is the best way, even though it takes time and investment. Joining communities where you think you'll have an audience, saying a few things then slamming your promo down everyone's throat every chance you get is the worst way (and I'm not saying that's what OP's doing, just that it happens, happened here very recently, and it turns off even the most laid-back reader in the world when it's relentless and manipulative).
