Exactly. Honestly? For me that part of the fun of writing fanfiction -- taking things I KNOW are completely random/arbitrary and weaving something that "explains" them.

Ex: in one of the anime I used to write for, one character wore a different and very unusual outfit for a handful of eps in a filler arc (of series with over 200 eps). Realistically, those episodes were probably farmed out, and either there was a miscommunication about how to draw that character, or someone just "had fun" and there was no time to change it, or idk, but I had a blast inventing an explanation for that outrageous purple coat.

Yes that's exactly what I'm about! Especially in fic like you said, when people make it something cute and funny. It kind of makes characters feel more complete sometimes.

I love doing the same thing for that one element of a show's pilot that they threw out for the rest of the series.

Yes! The fact that I KNOW it's random is the best part. It's like the difference between creating something new that I came up with out of a bunch of odds and ends left over by some writers, versus having some writer disassemble an existing thing into odds and ends, and tell me to figure out the correct way to put it back together. The first is SO much more fun.

Yup!

(Your imagery reminds me of that scene in Apollo 13 where they bring in that box of random stuff and dump it on the table because they have to figure out how to use a square filter in a round air-scrubber housing. I LOVE that. <3)
