Haha, it's a bit weird to see System Shock 2 get a mention here, even in passing.

And I tend to agree. I've consumed horror of all varieties since I was a teenager and the only thing that even puts me on edge anymore are video games. Alien Isolation was the first one to do it in a long time.

Yeah I just re-played it again after years of grumping about it. I still stand by my grump, but it's a better game than I remember :)

The 'it's a better game than I remember'-thing is so true of me for many games.

I'm not denying their sucky moments, it's just often if I replay oldies I do enjoy them, flaws and all.

I loved the atmosphere of Silent Hill 2, but it didn't exactly have the best gameplay ever. (I hate how easily you can run out of ammo in games like these, though of course I understand why they want to make it harder for you. At least for me, it was much scarier going up against the monsters with that damn wooden plank.)

Maybe watch let's plays if the gameplay bores you? It won't be the same experience, but if you mostly care about story that might not matter. (I watched one of Outlast and was still so terrified I screamed a couple times, lol. I'm a wuss with horror games.)

Watch LPs?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I do. L0rdvega's LPs of Silent Hill 1-3 are some of the best out there (partly because their blind and he never tried to do the tough guy this isn't freaking me out thing some guy lpers do with horror games.)

Haven't seen his LPs but I'll check him out. The only one I've been following so far is Helloween4545. I'm really picky when it comes to ridiculous commentary on my LP watch. lol

Text: In theory, I love horror video games. The setting, stories, character, I love it all. But actually playing them bores me. I know I could just stick to movies or books, but video games do horror so well.
