Did you expect better from Jennifer "Branka is an insane lesbian for no reason" Hepler

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure Kristjanson helped. Bioware in general doesn't do very well with mental illness or with lesbians.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know about mental illnesses, but 'not doing well with lesbians' is bullshit. Sera is fine, Traynor was fine, etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Are you referring to a comment Jennifer made in particular? Or Branka herself?

We have no reason to believe that Branka was anything other than bisexual. Oghren alludes to them being happy together at one point (and very sexually active), and as to why Branka went nuts... well, that's kind of part of the story.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that she was nuts was part of the story. That they had to add in a lesbian lover she was cheating with to make it even more dramatic for no reason was questionable

No, I don't mean "erase the gays," I mean the opposite. if they're going to include both it's another classic example of queerness being associated with cheating and insanity, and why can't it ever be the het ship that's the bad and cheating one tacked on for drama?

Uh but Hespith is never negatively portrayed, just very sad that Branka went nuts on HER TOO and disturbed at the horrendous events that occurred. I didn't find the Hespith bit shocking at all (maybe because I'm a lesbian myself). I liked Hespith and I felt sorry for her, and I am pretty sure that's exactly how the gamer is supposed to feel - she, also queer, is a victim just as Oghren. Branka's nuts because she's nuts, not because she slept with one of the women who went on the expedition with her.

And Bioware has plenty of positive same-sex relationships in the Dragon Age series, and plenty of fucked up het relationships. If this were the only example of LGBT in the whole series you might have a point, but as it stands...

"Plenty" is a strong word...

Frankly, compared to the straight relationships, I don't think gay representation is doing too badly, no. Especially with Inquisition in the equation. But even in Origins, Branka/Hespith was not the only example of same sex relationships.

I mean, if you want to go solely by numbers then they aren't doing bad, but quality matters too. Quality matters a lot. Personally, it doesn't make me feel good at all to turn on the game and be faced with evil lesbians, dead (and horribly tortured) lesbians, transphobic jokes, and queer characters so minor that no one remembers them. And it doesn't make me feel good that the most important/most plot-relevant romances are straight only. DA2 was slightly better than DAO, but Inquisition has been letting me down time and time again.

She may have been insane and a lesbian, but it was for a reason. And only a fool wouldn't save the Anvil.
