I don't think we can know anything for sure. I believe in God, and my beliefs lean Judeo-Christian. As far as literal or symbolic goes, I believe that all religions, including Abrahamic, are built on stories based on stories based on stories. So in fact there could be truth to them, but we can't know how much or little.

SA - And let me add that the "truth" could be something completely rational and nonspiritual. For example, I find it completely plausible that a lot of Gods and Prophets were in fact tribal leaders and Shamans or just really cool people exalted to a higher status over time. But I also believe it's possible spiritual events truly happened and are correctly retold. Maybe it's more a bit of both.

(I mean, even Biblical scholars agree Abraham was based on several tribal leaders, and the story of Isaac was based on human sacrifice being outlawed. Maybe there really was a kid named Isaac who was about to get the ax, but some act of mercy spared him.)
