I read a description in a ship manifesto which described him and McKay as 'simultaneously not hot and yet hot'. Which I sort of agree with. He is hot. And yet not.

He is cute and adorable. But I also came to hate his character by the end. He is such a man child. The archetype worked with Jack on SG1, but it just didn't work for me with John.

I don't remember later seasons all that well...
When my favorite characters do something disagreeable I blame writers and treat the eps in question as AU.

Can see where you're coming from. I adore John though, mostly because he's a bit darker than Jack was, and that's my bag. Towards the end the 'manchild' aspect just felt pasted on to me.
