I hypothesize that generosity or stinginess in terms of kudos and/or comments is almost entirely a function of fandom size. Specifically, I suspect that fandom size (measured in terms of number of fics) correlates inversely with fandom generosity (measured in terms of number of kudos for median fic when sorted for kudos). Of course you would need to control for fandoms that are dead or inactive and don't have fics for that reason; I suspect that excluding fandoms where the fic with the most kudos is still below a certain number of kudos (say, 50 or so) would do the trick.
