It actually takes me out of a story when I see fathers depicted as this because as far as I've seen in real life dads are rarely like this.

The truth is these roles in the story would better fit the mother character. But Hollywood will always go for a heroic parental male character over a female any day. Same with the Disney Renaissance films. Can't have the mums be the single parent, though that's usually the case, 'cause that would mean too many x chromosomes on screen.
