I hope you get over the block and get to write your letter, but what about writing it is a "need?" If he or you dies and it never happens he'll never know about it and it won't affect his life whatsoever. If you die you won't even care anymore.

Sometimes for whatever reason, a celebrity has a profound influence on a person's life. Even if they've never met, saying 'thank you' is appropriate. (Or it feels as if it should be.)

Wasn't trying to be an ass, I just don't get the fake relationships people have in their heads with celebs. It's fun to be a fan, but I don't understand the folks who go to that next level. Sorry if it came across as rude.

I think it's different when it's someone who had such a profound effect on your life as the OP implies that person was to them

It's kind of like people who follow celebs on twitter or instagram and ask them to follow back. Now I can completely understand the following part, the person admires or finds the celeb attractive or interesting. But for the life of me, I can't figure out why that person would think the celeb would be at all interested in them? Unless there is something super special about that person that the celeb him/herself has an interest in.

I don't think the celeb would be interested in ME. But I know from interviews that he appreciates fan letters (and tries to reply), and also it's connected with a whole load of emotional childhood stuff - which obviously I'm not going to put in the letter! but has a lot to do with why I really want to write at least something (and also what makes it so hard)
