I'm the same. The only reason I look for, engage with and invest in the fandom is because I've already become engaged with and invested in the original canon.

I've seen people 'participate' in fandoms who it turns out have never watched/read/whatever the canon it comes from and I don't understand that either. I guess they just want to be in the fandom anyway because... no, I got nothing.

The fandom without the canon is like the hangover without the fun of getting drunk in the first place.

There's some really awesome fic out there, some of which is better than the canon. Sometimes I've followed a writer across fandoms or even started to watch a show after reading the fic... and then been disappointed by canon.

One of my favourite fandom pairings is something I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like in the original canon. Fandom has softened a lot of the ickier dynamics - while leaving enough conflict to be interesting - and added a lot of motivation that's pure fanon, although it makes sense within the confines of the original canon.

...Or so I understand: this is from the point of view of someone who is not familiar with the original canon first-hand :D but has friends in the fandom. I don't participate in the sense of actively writing fic or whatever, but I follow the fan stuff to an extent because I get interested (sometimes) in what my friends are interested in. (Which is just as well, since the friendships would be a lot more boring listening to them all discuss it amongst themselves if I weren't interested.) But the original series is some hundreds of episodes long at this point, and I just don't have time to keep up with it (even if I thought I would enjoy it. Something of which I am by no means convinced).

nayrt

Don't you want to formulate your own interpretation of the characters and their relationships though, rather than what you know third-hand from other fans? As subjective as a lot of interpretation can be, I'd be worried that I wasn't getting a true or accurate reflection of, well, anything if I hadn't watched/read it for myself. I definitely couldn't form enough of an attachment to read about characters I didn't 'know' in that sense.

I get taking recs and suggestions on what to watch from your friends, but isn't it possible that it's your friends' interpretation that's given you the impression you wouldn't enjoy something, rather than finding out for yourself?

I guess, like the ayrt, I don't understand why you'd fandom the fandom rather than the actual source material. Because you're just fandoming other people's interpretations of something, rather than the thing itself.

AYRT

In this particular instance, I'm fairly sure I'm not getting an accurate reflection of canon! I'm also reasonably sure that I don't want one. It just doesn't appeal all that much first-hand. (Of course I can't know for sure and maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised, but I'm fairly confident in my evaluation, from what I've heard from friends and other trusted sources.)

Since I don't really have time to catch up on the (massive) original, it's a moot point... but I've heard enough cautionary tales of the, "From all the hype I heard about [thing], I thought [thing] would be awesome. But now I have [watched, read, whatevered] it for myself, and it sucks! I am so disappoint!" variety,

I have fun enjoying friends' interpretation of the thing in question; even if it's shallow, I'm fine with that.
