No, I've been speaking English my whole life. It's only really been in the last decade or so that "dude" has become a nongendered word. And it's dumb.

dude, that's just how language works. words take up different meanings all the all.

So you're aware of that usage of the word, but pretend not to understand people when they use it that way just because you don't like it? That's pretty dumb.

Being aware that it can be used as a nongendered word and expecting every instance ever to be nongendered are two different things.

This particular instance wouldn't be especially ambiguous to someone already aware of the word's modern usage. You're being pretty pedantic if you see A telling B "dude, chill" and your response is to ask A why they're assuming B is a man.

I don't know that you'll read this since it's so late, but I've lived in California my whole life, I was already an adult a decade ago, I'm a cis-woman, and everyone in my peer group (but not bosses or professors or parents/elderly relatives) got and still gets called dude, at least since the 80s, unless they say it bugs them.
