Oh gawd, all those years I spent seeing the Sailor Moon anime, and I never noticed that - despite costumes that otherwise varied only by color - they all have different styles of shoes/boots! Only Sailors Moon and Mercury match. When I saw this photo it stood out a mile and was totally distracting, but when I went to compare the two, I realized the footwear shown here is completely faithful to the anime! HOW DID I NEVER SEE THIS BEFORE!?

FandomSecrets, I feel I have learned something today. Thank you, OP!

holy shit

Haha well just to add to this information, the outer senshi designs are varied even more, different shoes, different gloves, different sleeves and a few other details. When the senshi power up though, they all start to have outfits that look more and more similar (I love their powered up forms but it kind of sucks that their individual uniforms are lost, especially Saturn because her first form is my favorite.)

And the original designs had even more variation but I believe Naoko's editor shot it down because it'd be hard to draw consistently and even harder to animate. For the record it was this: http://mangastyle.net/images/naoko_original.gif

I always assumed that the sleeves where about virginity/maidenhood or at least a stage in coming of age. In season 3, anyway.

Afaik long Kimono sleeves are a thing for unmarried young women in japan.

So going by this example, the four inners would be "girls", and get 3 rings on their sleeves in, Neptune and Uranus - who are, at that point, not yet completely committed to their relationship (the whole religious motive, the questin of guilt and sin is typical gay angst - see also alien 4 btw.), but are probably past 2nd base, they get 2, while Pluto has already loved and lost... her sleeves. Though I'd love to know who she banged to get over Endymion xD (I started drawing a doujinshi about that, but never finished)

That's an interesting theory! Though Mercury doesn't have any rings in the manga (and if you have watched the new anime, they kept faithful to that design) so what's manga Mercury gotten up to? lol

I always kinda assumed as well that Osabu shot down some of the original designs because they're pretty out there. Mercury's is quite cute, but Jupiter's is really kind of ugly.

Yeah I can see that, I think they were constantly trying to reign Naoko's ideas into a less out there place. Naoko has some cool ideas but sometimes she goes too far with them.

And like even if those outfits had stayed in the manga, there is no way they would have animated them in the 90s so we still would have gotten simplified versions for the anime.
