how to stop drooling when sleeping on a plane

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't fly often, and I haven't ended up falling and drooling on the person beside me (yet), but I get embarrassed. Tried wearing a surgical mask, but couldn't breathe properly with it over my nose, and it was awkward just having it balanced over my mouth. And it didn't contain the saliva securely enough, so I kept waking up.

I also drool in my sleep normally, and end up drooling even if I try to prop my jaw closed with a pillow. It might have to do with my thick lingual frenulum (short tongue). Help?

Maybe try a chin strap?

Not familiar with chin straps. Where can you get them?

Oh, wow. Maybe I'll try, thanks!

Vaseline at the corners of your mouth? Breathe Right nose strip?

FWIW, I wouldn't judge if the person next to me on the plane was drooling in their sleep. I'd probably just assume they were having a really good nap and be jealous of their ability to have a good sleep on a plane.

Just... try really hard not to fall asleep on someone's shoulder if you fall asleep?

Yeah, I got nothing.

Wouldn't it be better to ask for ways to make sure you won't fall over someone else? Because that's terrible, drooling or not. Drooling on its own? Most people won't watch you sleep.

So far I've been successful padding myself in my seat with the headrest and blanket, and so thought drooling was the main danger. But yeah, if I can't stop drooling it's better to be extra sure I don't fall.

Maybe one of those doughnut shaped travel pillows? It probably wouldn't solve the drool issue, but at least you wouldn't be leaning on another passenger's shoulder.

I use a neck pillow and prop my sides/back with the airline blanket/pillow and they've worked for keeping me from leaning. But I always need to wipe saliva off my neck pillow when I wake up. Thanks though!
