You're right that it was addressed like that, but the point was to get over it quickly. None of the X-Men questioned the relationship or the fact she looked like a Jean clone. Everyone was happy when they jumped into marriage, despite the fact she looked just like his recently dead ex and no one knew why she looked just like her. Hell, they didn't even assume villain plot and ran a blood test.

And why was that? Because Claremont intended it as a happy ending. It wasn't supposed to be unhealthy, creepy or even a rebound. Maddie wasn't even supposed to be a clone - she was created to be the Jean substitute so that Scott would retire and live happily ever after.

Claremont didn't intend to write what you call the creepy ending - he altered the story after editorial forced Jean's resurrection.
