Probably going to get hate for this opinion but whatever.

It bothers the hell out of me when people who aren't white think any real or perceived slight is an act of racism.

Black lady didn't get hired by a white boss = Racism! (But what if she wasn't as qualified as the white woman next to her?)

Black man gets shot white cops = Racism! (But what if he was threatening police with a gun?)

White man and black woman don't pair up = Racism! (But what if their friendship really is just platonic?)

Everything isn't fucking racism. I swear RACISM is the latest buzzword that's making the word lose its actual meaning.

And for the people who want to be represented in media more: Stop crying about the lack of representation and go to acting school. Be the change you want to see onscreen.

As someone who is non-white, I agree.

If there is EVIDENCE that racism played a part, then sure -- go for it.

When The Last Airbender movie was made, it was clearly racism that led to the casting choices -- because anyone with half a brain could tell you that the characters weren't white in the cartoon.

But something like this...it's just speculation. There's no way to prove it. And you're accusing someone of prejudice based on nothing which is awful and demeans real acts of racism.

I did hear another story, by a guy who worked on the last airbender, but it's not much fucking better.

Basically, nepotism happened. Producer really wanted a certain girl to play Katara, so guess who got the part? And then they needed a white brother for white girl, so..

Of course, this just means brutally retarded and maybe oblivious to why this was racist producer instead of straight up racist producer which isn't exactly "better"

Yeah, the guy had some legit proof he worked on the project, only talked about it after it was done. Dude had a few things to say.

Some of us gave M. Night undue shade. Apparently a lot of the "BUT WHY DID YOU DO THIS" decisions like that weren't his call. Now mind you, he's not scott free, the bad pacing and the camera's love of close up faces? That's on him. But other stuff, like the nightmarishly bad CGI? Unbrilliantly handed off to out of house and totally not his fault.

So I was like, "Hm, that's an interesting theory, I wonder if there's anything about the actress that would explain her being cast for reasons of nepotism?" Go to check her Wikipedia page. Oh, her father's a billionaire. Okay, everything makes sense now.

You were doing alright with the troll bait until the last line, but that just put it too far over the top. In order to be effective, you have to make us believe that someone could really be that stupid.

I was considering responding to what you're saying but it sounds like you'll take any disagreement as "hate" so whatever

Nah, just expecting a lot of STFU CISHET WHITE SCUM. I'm seriously tired of seeing racism thrown around all the time.

I really meant the last line, too. Seems there are people who don't understand the concept that in order to be represented onscreen, there have to be actors who fit the criteria to do it.

If you're Latino/Latina and want to see more of that onscreen, go work to be an actor and inspire others to follow. Same for any race, gender or sexual orientation. How is a leader supposed to lead a revolution without being the example they want others to follow?

NAYRT but it seems just about impossible to me that there aren't really good actors of every possible racial alignment in Hollywood.

I would wager money on it.

For me, it's more...I don't get the obsession with having white creators be more representative. I'd much rather have POC authors, writers, actors, etc. get more opportunities.

I don't watch a show made by Japanese people and wonder "but where are all the non-Japanese"?

Or if I watch a telenovela, I'm not bummed out if all the actors/actresses are latino/latina.

Re: Probably going to get hate for this opinion but whatever.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Of course you don't, because now you're bringing in different cultures (which is more than just race) and settings. But do you watch a show made by white people set in California or New York City and wonder "where are all the non-white people?" Because if you don't, you should.

Re: Probably going to get hate for this opinion but whatever.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It depends to be honest.

There are white people in New York City and California who basically predominately interact with other white people.

But like...if a show was set in South Africa, for example, I wouldn't demand that there be white people, even though they're 8.9% of the population. An all black cast would be fine with me since they make up 79.2% of the population -- especially if it was a black director.
