The problem with the Second Empire is that so much of the period comes down to "Jesus, Louis Napoleon was a doofus".

Hahaha. Oddly enough, I don't remember much of what he actually did or failed to do, though I imagine a lot of what I read about showed the repercussions of it. My classes focused on Zola novels in context.
