Hip Problems

(Anonymous) 2015-03-04 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
So, my hip has decided it hates me. This isn't the first time either. I think it has something to do with how I'm sitting or the chairs I'm using but I can't figure out what.

Does anyone have any advice for this situation (areas to investigate, pain-managment techniques, relevant stretching?, etc.)?

I have hip problems too. My left hip gets sore and then eventually pins and needles if I sleep on my side. Haven't yet figured out how to stop that, but I do find that putting heat on it in the morning helps somewhat.

You can probably find helpful advice and diagrams by googling "good posture". A lot of people don't realize they're sitting in such a way to cause themselves back/leg problems.

I've had hip and knee problems for years. It started with a really careless on my part workplace injury (don't carry heavy shit you know you can't handle just because you're stressed out, kids; you're gonna have a bad time), but since then it's probably been exacerbated by poor posture and too much sitting on cheap'n'nasty chairs.

Obviously a doctor or a physio is your first port of call, because any pain like that needs investigating by professionals not FS!ers (especially if it's bad or severe enough to impact your daily activities), but if you've done that and it's still bothering you then the only way I can keep it manageable is to make sure I stay as active as possible.

Don't sit for longer than 30 minutes without getting up and walking around or stretching. Try to incorporate walking or gentle strength exercises if your doc says it's okay - another reason you need to be assessed is that some types of pain/injury are amenable to being exercised (is it affecting muscle, bone, the joint structure itself etc. etc. etc.), some aren't, and obviously we can't differentiate between the two so to increase activity without knowing what you're dealing with can be dangerous. If I skip even one day's walking I can definitely feel the difference with pain and stiffness. Generally that sort of pain will be treated with NSAIDs as a first stop, so if you're able to take them you could try some OTC Ibuprofen to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't (or hasn't) respond to pain relief at all, then you definitely need to see a doctor about this.
