For what it's worth, Awakening was not the first Fire Emblem game to use the pairing mechanic. I know characters can have children in Genealogy of the Holy War, which came out in 1996 for the Super Famicon. I think it had a Wii U port, or you could try emulating it. (And I think there are a bunch of games in the series that have multiple possible romances, but don't have children.)

Huh, yet another game I hadn't heard about. (Well, I HAD heard of Fire Emblem, but I had no idea about the pairing mechanic.) I haven't bought a Nintendo console in a long time and only own a DS. Booo.

The romances sound great, though! I'm not ashamed to say I get giddy thinking about BioWare romances, and when given the option (Even in games like Skyrim where the options aren't particularly exciting, and the interaction is limited) I take it. Maybe one day I'll get to try one of these.
