I don't think racism was responsible for D/S becoming endgame; as said elsewhere in the thread, more likely the show just went with the usual cliche way of playing things out - main gal and main guy hook up at the end. I suspect eventual D/S was intended from the start.

But yes, it has always bugged me a great deal how Valerie gets so little love from the fandom. (The fact that I prefer Valerie as a character, and D/V over D/S as a ship is pretty much directly responsible for me never actively participating in this fandom. I only have so much time in my life to devote to writing fanfics, so I'd rather stick with writing ones other people besides me are gonna want to read.) And yes, I have always suspected that the character would be a LOT more popular if she were white.
