OP of #14 here

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Both #14 and #19 use black text with white outlines, but #19's outline looks significantly better to my eye. Should I be using wider outlines, or is there something else I need to fix for future secrets?

Yes, use a wider outline. At least 2 pixels (that is what I use for black outlines).

I personally like the way 14 looks best.

14 has its charm, but 19 is ultimately easier on the eyes (literally easier, I mean, as in, it tired out my eyes significantly less)

I think it depends on your eyes? I find 14 easier to read. 19 has too much white. I find that much white harder to read and almost physically painful at times.

Oh! D: Sorry for potentially leading OP the wrong design route.

All eyes must be protected and cherished.

No worries. :) I'm used to people prefering white background with black text rather than the reverse. I switch my screen when I can and deal when I can't.

I think the outline of #12 looks better than #14, and they both look better than #19. #19's too thick, I think, and yours is just a fraction too thin.

Aim for something like #12. But also keep your font in mind as well as your outline weight. Yours and #12 are a sans-serif font, which can sometimes (especially against dark backgrounds) have such sharp angles that our eyes see the outline as very jagged and hard to read. #19's a serif font, and the reverse sort of happens - it's such a thin font that too much white outline makes the font itself seem pixelated and not that smooth.

A fairly heavy font with a decent outline (2-3 pixels is usually what I'd use on graphics) should be your best bet for readability.

I used to use 1-pixel outlines for text in my comics, but found that 2-pixel outlines often read better.

That said, I think a big difference is that #19 largely has the text over white elements anyway.

Definitely thicken the lines. Though I think 19's are too thick, especially on the smaller text. The width of the outline needs to work with the size (and design) of the font. (Though I've never seen 1px look good.)
