Re: Sort of Based on #1
We actually got sidetracked from our makeup and stuff because we'd forgotten just how engrossing RTD's Who was.
But I also totally agree with you that I'm glad he left when he did. RTD had arcs for both companions and the Doctor, and while the companion arcs varied, the Doctor was essentially: rebirth/warming up, honeymoon phase, depression phase, healing phase... and then the specials were sort of straight back into depression phase. RTD was very fond of depressed!Doctor.
And I initially loved Season Five for that reason. I saw it as an intentional break from all the drama. Like the Doctor himself had gotten so worn out from being sad that he made himself into an emotionally distant, manic-pixie-dream-boy to cope with it...
...and then Season Six happened.
