Image: The cast from the movie "Pitch Black", from the "Riddick" series.

Text: It's silly, but I'm still taken aback by the fact that the Heroine didn't make it.

They always do!

I feel like it was a real life-changer for me.

And one movie later, everybody but one of the main protagonists from this one is dead! ^_^

Spoilers for Deep Blue Sea

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-03-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Original cut: the black guys die. The hero lives. The obnoxious scientist lives and becomes the love interest. Test audiences weren't pleased.

Recut: the hero lives, and so does the funny guy. The scientist dies unpleasantly. Yay!

It really is. You can't hate that death.

I always forget who survives this movie besides Riddick and Jack.

Yeah, I couldn't predict what would happen in that movie. I loved it and watched it a million times because of that.
esteefee: Atlantis in sunset. (atlantis)

Well, what I loved about the movie was it was a hero's journey for both of them. But she had to die for him to learn his lesson, and she had to go back for him alone for her to learn her own lesson. It's a perfect dovetail.

Such a great movie.

Well said! And I agree.

It was unexpected but refreshing at the same time. And as a previous commenter said, both she and Riddick learned something.

I seem to always forget that she dies at the end, I don't know why. Extreme denial maybe that this time she'll make it?

The one for me that was like this was Guillermo Del Toro's 'Mimic.'

spoiler here -

I'd been raised on pulp sci fi and horror, so when the kids go down into the subway and encounter the giant bug, I'm like 'oh, yeah, they'll run away and survive and we'll get a glimpse of the monster. I been here before.' I went into that scene with no dread.

No.

Even from his earliest films, Del Toro does not play that fucking game.

Blew my mind.

I watched that one recently (about a year ago), and spent about five minutes after that scene reeling from shock in the back of my mind.

Kudos to the man for going there, but, brrrrr...
