Can we just kill the entire concept of "royal blood"? Please? Thanks. (Thankfully, it's getting rarer nowadays.)

Why?

Rather, what about it or how it's used bothers you? The base concept of royalty, or...?

It feels too Master Race for me. I don't like that sory of claptrap in real life, so I don't want it bleeding into my fiction. (It doesn't help that Robert Newcomb, the last real standard-holder for "royal blood" in fiction, believes in it IRL.)

nayrt - I assume you don't mean fandoms where it's actually a relevant issue, like in historical settings or fantasy based on a historical setting, though. The fact that it's a little bit "master race"ish is part of the point.

Um I think it depends on the context it's used. I mean if you're talking about members of a noble or monarch family they might b considered royal blood". I mean its not saying they're better they just happen to have the blood of royal people in them. Technically royals are historically some of the most fucked up so....

I assumed OP was talking about cases where being royalty did automatically make the character a better person (or that was how the author saw it). Like it means something beyond just determining a person's place in society.

Ahh allright then. yes that would be kinda awful and ridiculous. Your protagonist doesn't have to be "Secretly a Prince" to be a hero.

Well, it is kind of a real thing that people talk about in the context of monarchy and aristocracy. It's not really a Master Race thing, though. It's just being used as a metonym for someone being of royal descent or lineage.

Now, if you're proposing that we get rid of monarchy all together, you have my vote on that one

I might be wrong but I think OP means people acting as though "royal blood" actually affects a person's character, not just their place in society. Like say someone is actually a prince/princess/kind/queen but they've been raised by regular people and have no idea they're actually royalty, but somehow they're a better person than everyone around them, just because of the royal blood (that they might not eve know they have at first).

I was actually trying to refer to when royal blood gives you supernatural powers.

Re: Tropes/common themes that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
That kind of depends on the story for me, I guess. Then again, I don't actually see that trope very often.

Does that include people who aren't royalty, but have ancestors who were?

Re: Tropes/common themes that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has royal ancestors. Like in the UK Henry I had twenty or so illegitimate children, King John ditto, Edward III over a dozen legitimate children, etc etc.

The entire point of Harry Potter was "supernatural powers are caused by heredity" which always bugged me about it.

ngl, the idea of getting upset by the concept of genetics in Harry Potter is pretty funny to me. Does the idea that being double-jointed or albino or red-headed is caused by heredity bug you too?

Re: Tropes/common themes that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
double jointed, albino and redheaded people don't consider themselves superior.

That's what they want you to think.
