In a number of the sitcoms I watch there's a subtext of the main male character's best guy friend being in love with the main man's wife. It doesn't usually serve any narrative purpose, and it weirds me out because I feel like it unecessarily objectifies the wife. Like, she's just a Thing to be attained since her point of view is usually glossed over.

That'd bug me less if we ever saw the genderswapped version. What about a lady who's secretly in love with her best friend's husband? Sounds like comedy gold to me.

I see more of, "main male character has a work partner/old friend who is clearly almost codependently attached to him."
