Re: Question for Beta Readers
(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)If the beta is unfamiliar with the fandom, there is no way they would know if the characters are OOC, so there is no need to apologize for that.
Having said that, if you're looking for a beta to correct the OOCness, they really need to have at least a passing acquaintance with the fandom.
But if you're just looking for grammar/homonyms/punctuation critique, that's only to be expected in something that is being beta'ed. So no apologies necessary. Nobody is perfect. Just no yelling at the beta if you disagree with a suggestion. If you want to cultivate a relationship, discuss the points with them. The writer I beta for and I are both stubborn, but we present our points clearly and tend to reach a happy middle ground.
Finding the right person to work with you is crucial. And don't be afraid to fire a beta if things aren't working out. It's really a partnership, and if you're oil and water.. it's just not going to work.
Those are my thoughts. Oh! And the fic I beta is in a fandom that isn't my main one, but I grew up with the show, so I kind of had an idea before going in. A little refresher course, and I was set. Best of luck!
