(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)If you're looking for straight up portrayals, one of the most haunting games I've played recently has been The Last Door. SO. FUCKED. But also very amazing and poignant. It's set in the late 1800s, and follows a guy as he checks up on the members of an old school club when they were all children, but the club is basically Satan's glee club.
In terms of older games, Phantasmagoria 2 is about a guy with schizophrenia. It's a puzzle/interaction game, but it can get... a little disturbing?
The games I mentioned above that I'm playing are the Max Payne series, a story driven 3rd person shooter. Max Payne is clearly, clearly mentally ill, partly due emotional/mental trauma, but also implied through the repeated head trauma, as well as the fact that during the first game, everyone keeps doping him with a horrible drug that gives you really fucked up hallucinations and delusions.
By the second game, he's not exposed to the drug, but it's established he's having hallucinations and paranoid thoughts left t his own devices.
