Which is a reasonable point - Americans are much more likely to consider first cousin relationships incestuous than, say, the British. (It also has different social stereotypes attached to it).

Even in the US, those sensibilities are relatively modern. The cousin marriage thing wasn't particularly unusual or controversial until sometime in the early 1900s.

Well yes, but the series in question was set well after cousin marriage became taboo in the US.
