Well, but in the case of this comic the OP is being too cynical. This is not "don't complain about bad representation" - this is "why are you preemptively complaining about new representation before you know whether it's good or not?" Most people being cynical about it haven't even read the comic and they're *all* jumping the gun.

Most likely because they've been burned before, especially by DC. If it actually goes somewhere, is long term, and neither of them get killed off right away any cynicalness will fade away. But DC makes retcons all the time.

Harley and Ivy shared a kiss in their comic, and as an anon posted above, was retconned as platonic. An initial "yeah, sure DC, I totally believe you're going to follow through" reaction is not even surprising, let alone "too cynical".

Because it's coming from DC, a publisher who has a bad track record lately when it comes to LGBT characters in the long haul. Such as giving us a lesbian Batwoman while putting editorial constraints on how her sexuality was developed. Or perhaps we can talk about making bisexuality the secret problem that must be disclosed on Gotham, retconning one of their last same-sex relationships, or getting a man who sat on the board of a hate group to write Superman. Not to mention there's the overall editorial direction of DC post-52 which has generally been criticized for pandering to a primarily straight demographic.

EXACTLY!

People are automatically assuming that this is just some bone being thrown. You don't know. Do you read the comics? Most people don't and feel safe saying that this is patronizing. Which is what makes me roll my eyes. It's this attitude of "We want representation! We want representation! We want representation!" "Okay, here you go!" "No, screw that." "But you haven't even read it. You don't even know if it's good or not." "We don't need to read it to complain!"

Oh, come on. Really? Just read it. And if it's bad, complain. But don't demand representation, get it and automatically assume that it is bad without even looking at it. That is just illogical. Not to mention, you are shooting yourself in the foot. DC is less likely to create a new bi character or make an existing character bi if people are going to complain before the comic is even printed. Jesus, the way people are complaining before even reading it is something the far right would do. Stop it.
