It's often because the person writing doesn't want to be misunderstood. I've noticed it's quite common with people with learning disorders, dyslexia and dyspraxia, and people on the autism spectrum. They're so used to being misunderstood that they craft their posts and comments very carefully, which comes off as formal and stilted to people who haven't grown up with those disorders.
