The plot is meh but it makes up for it in pure stylishness and nightmare fuel.

Really? While not the most amazing thing ever, I thought it was a step above meh at perfectly respectable at the core, and all the conceits of the setting really pushed the story over the top to me.

(And part of that is, as you say, the pure stylishness. Which is absolutely epic. But perhaps I'm merely grouping things differently rather than actually disagreeing...)

My problem may be that I'm currently in the middle of rewatching all of Tom Baker's episodes in order, and it falls in between Deadly Assassin and Talons of Weng Chiang, so my standards for plot were raised quite a bit. I wouldn't have that issue watching it in isolation.

But yeah, the visuals more than make up for any plot deficiencies.
