The big thing for me is that when he thinks she's engaged or when she clearly expresses her disinterest, he backs the fuck off.

He's clearly very attracted to her, and was certainly moving towards courting, but when she doesn't want him and seems to be engaged to Willoughby he backs off. His behaviour is exemplary.

(NB: I am the only person who finds Alan Rickman startlingly unattractive and doesn't even like his voice much, and the Thompson-Winslet S&S is my least favourite Austen adaptation ever, including Clueless. Sooo.)

Even when the man behaves appropriately in accepting a woman is not available or not reciprocating there seems to be an attitude that unrequited feelings automatically make a guy a creep. It's annoying.

Eh. As a lifelong receiver of the "omg girl with unrequieted feelings = TOTAL STALKERY LOSER! hahah!" trope, that's not really the part that makes me cry myself to sleep at night.

Yeah, but making something out of nothing makes it easy for the actual problem of the double standard to not be taken seriously.
