Well, two points, I guess.

First, I don't agree that the geography of London is unimpeachable. I mean, that example was serious - there was no 221 Baker Street during Holmes' time. There are legitimately arguments about the actual location and layout of the flat.

Second, I agree that a vaguely 'old fashioned' feel is not enough. I also think that the atmosphere of the 1890s, more than specific details, is the important thing, both in the original Holmes stories and in fic. I don't think that's easy to pull off, or can be done with only a few cursory references. But I also think it comes from something other than EG the precise cut of suits and train schedules and things like that.

AYRT. That specific example may hold, true; but not knowing which side of the Thames one is on, reasonable distances and so on - doesn't sit with the "exact knowledge of London" in the stories, and to anyone who knows the city even today just spoils believability. That was my point about geography.
