Rowling had a frustrating tendency to promote "if your significant other isn't white your relationship will go badly" throughout the series.

Wait, what?

The only other example I can think of is Cho.

Yeah I agree.

I mean the only problem with Angelina's relationship with Fred was that Fred kind of died. Which wasn't her fault.

They might be including Harry and Ron's terrible Yule Ball date with Parvati and Padma.

Well to be honest that was kind of Harry and Ron's own faults. Neither of them really treated their dates very well and they ignored them. The clear lesson there IMO is, don't take someone on a date and then spend all night paying attention to someone else.

I think it would have gone the same way no matter WHO they took. They were both really preoccupied all night because plot, and because of Ron's insecurity and jealousy about Hermione.

+1 It was about Ron and Harry being distracted and idiotic, not about the Patil twins being Indian.

Didn't Ginny and Dean date for a bit? Or am I completely remembering the books wrong?
Although to be fair, that relationship mostly served to make Harry jealous.
