They sort of are? Like they do provide more general world building, but the problem both with the movie and the books is that a *lot* of stuff isn't actually explained until the third book. Which, admittedly, when you get there does make sense why it's not explained before plot-wise, but well...It makes the books confusing in ways that really don't do them [and by extension the movie] any favors.
