When you have to spend hours in the gym and literally starve yourself to lose weight because you have a metabolic disorder, that's unworkable for most people in terms of time commitment and/or starvation. Because starvation.
I am so so so glad you don't have to deal with that issue. I think it's amazing that you are able to control your weight extremely easily with dietary modifications that work for you. Kudos and also yay!
I have Hashimoto's, so my thyroid has been fucked for a while and will crap out eventually. It is definitely more difficult for me to maintain/lose weight now than it was before this autoimmune disorder reared its head. I'm currently at an hour and a half at a the gym every single day. My heart is pretty damn healthy and I can run (okay walk and swim) circles around most people I know for forever, but losing weight? HAAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!
I have a career. And a family. I can't give more than an hour and a half to the gym every day.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 03:29 am (UTC)(link)Dear god, if this is what people think "diets" consist of, no wonder 95% of people fail at them.
Protip: If you're doing that, and expecting to lose weight, it's not the diet that's failing you, it's you who's failing yourself by not actually doing any research into healthy, low calorie recipes, making a bunch of baseless assumptions about what a "diet" is, and then quitting before you've even begun because of you're preconceived notions.

You're making more sense to me now.
You're a bootstraps person. You were able to do X and everybody else should be also no matter how their circumstances differ.
For what it's worth, I do think it's awesome you're able to meet your goals. I find your smug superiority and insistence that everyone else's experience is just like yours less so.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)Did you just... compared people being fat (from taking too many calories than their body needs, which is what being fat IS) to people with economic drawbacks? That's just wrong.
If you don't think losing weight it worth all the diet and exercising it requires, that's your decision. But don't pretend that body fat has nothing to do with your calorie intake, because it's simply untrue.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 06:06 am (UTC)(link)Wait, nevermind, I've only just read that you have an actual desease that makes weight loss harder. I thought you were one of those people who are healthy, but talk about their "genes" or something preventing them from being thin, despite never having tried to lose weight for a meaningful amount of time.

But that just really got under my skin.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 04:55 am (UTC)(link)That was you when something got under your skin and not being milquetoast?
Damn, I wish I had your grace to handle internet arguments.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)That isn't what people think diets are. That isn't what's being talked about. For someone with the kind of issue we're talking about, the only way to achieve the necessary caloric deficit to lose weight outs to starve yourself - and that might not even work.
You talk about education, but you are completely unwilling to learn about something that falls outside of your eexperience, instead insisting that Because YOU were able to do something, everyone must be able to. Losing a thyroid or having Hashimoto's does a much worse job on your system than you want to accept, and honestly, the fact that you are more interested in taking bits of what's been said and twisting them so that they'll suit your argument than in listening and admitting that there are situations that don't fit your narrow view days some pretty rotten things about the kind of person you are. Art the very least, you're more concerned with convincing yourself that you've won than in actual knowledge.
