I got that sense too, but also the general impression that each faction was basically a stereotype/one-dimensional version of whatever their virtue was (like the... didn't the generous people only wear grey because to want colorful clothing was selfish or something?), and that the books were at least trying to criticize this notion.

I got bored and stopped after the first one, though, so idk how accurate that is.

The critique was pretty half-hearted. Mostly the author fapped to how beautifully selfless and perfectly virtuous the Abnegation people were. One almost got the impression that she thought that the faction system would be totally fine, had the evil erudites not messed it all up for everyone else.
