Harry Potter - Oldbies?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there's a lot of other HP fans around here, but I'm curious as to how long you've been in the fandom. I sometimes feel like I'm one of the few people from the really old days left in fandom - I came in 2000, a month before the release of GoF. I remember Cassiegate as it was unfolding. Also, I didn't even touch LJ fandom until 2004, I was at fanfiction.net, FictionAlley and SugarQuill.

... anyone else like that?

I actually joined pretty late (before the sixth book came out?) but had read the first three books in the inter between the third and the fourth.

I actually never read the last four books! :0

I've been around about as long as you have, though I wasn't really active in fandom until a little while before OotP came out. I also didn't join LJ until later. I was at FictionAlley (sad that it died), Portkey, fanfiction.net, and at least for a little while Mugglenet.

FictionAlley died?! D: What happened to all the fic?

The site is still there I think. The forums are just not at all active anymore and I'm not sure new fics are posted anymore. The only thing that ever seems posted is spam from that one Ginny-stan who just doesn't give up and keeps making new troll accounts.

I got into the fandom a few months before the first movie came out. I was working at a library and my friend who was also working there told me to read the books because parents were going to come in with a million questions about them after the movie came out. (He was right.)

From the first chapter, I fell in love with the books.

I used to do HP fanart on LJ. It went over well. It was really the first HUGE fandom that I was an active member in versus just a casual fan.

I've never really been IN the fandom, but I've been reading fic since around 2001.

not in the fandom anymore, but i was in it at its peak. joined LJ for it. 2001, i think.

eta: the last think i remember being invested in, fandom-wise, was the SBP.

AYRT - I remember that! I actually wasn't as into it - I read so much MWPP fic during and a bit after the three year summer and I think I was actually kind of tired of MWPP fic by the time SBP rolled around. :/

For the absolute longest time I thought GoF came out in 2004....but I started reading the books in 2001, so I was a little behind.

I think that too sometimes and I got the book when it was released. I think it's because book four/2004 goes together.

Oh, my sense of time is all screwed up too. I remember my sister and I read books 1-3 the most. Like we read them OVER and OVER until the 4th came out after which we still reread them but not as frequently. And I remember that book 1-3 period being the most hardcore, longest-seeming time span. Only...

Actually looking back, we got the books for Christmas '99 and GoF came out in the summer of '00, so it was six months. SIX MONTHS.

God, it still feels like so much longer.

2000 for me as well, but I stayed out of the main LJ fandom for a long time. Stuck to a bunch of RPG forums.

Magical Hogwarts was one of the big ones. Was there from about 2005-2007. It's still running which is amazing. No one's there from my time anymore though. And the admin's are good at purging inactive accounts which I guess is good from an RP standpoint, but annoying from an archival POV.

What else... yeah, I was at ffn too, though I didn't post anything. Everyone always brings up and remembers the Draco Trilogy, but I'm kind of shocked at how much the Eliza Diawna Snape trilogy has faded from fandom memory because I remember the two being neck and neck in popularity at the time.

AYRT - Eliza's fics were some of the first I found! I never really got into them, though. I think they faded more because Cassie Claire left fandom later, whereas I think Eliza Diawna Snape left much sooner, plus CC was also in a lot of other BNF circles. It's definitely interesting that she's never mentioned though. Or Mena Baines, for that matter, she was pretty big back then.

What happened to Eliza Diawna Snape, anyway?

If you count my time as a lurker, I was in HP fandom from 2002-6. I also didn't reach LJ until 2003-4. Mostly I was around ff.net, and then some lj comms. I pretty much stopped reading other peoples' fic in 2005*, and had mostly lost interest in the series by the time Deathly Hallows came out. I had too much shit going on in my own life, too awful an internet situation, and my own fic for it was all basically original in nature (historical AU).

*Since 2007, I basically don't read it (or write it) for any fandoms anymore. I read maybe 2 fics a year, only if I'm particularly looking for something, or on a strong recommendation.

I got into HP after the 5th book was published. I searched out all the fic on all the archives and looked at some art but that was about it. Stayed well away from fandom drama.

I started reading the books in the fall of 1999, so I was definitely into the fandom either by late '99 or early 2000. I was always kind of a lurker, though. I don't think I even joined FictionAlley till 2003 or 04, though I had been reading the forums and fics long before then.

I'm old as balls in HP, more or less read the books as they were released.
I used to hang out in Snape Yahoo-groups. lol
