But...I mean that. The prettiest faces I've ever seen were on larger women. Why is that backhanded?

Because it's so often a passive-aggressive way of saying "you'd be so pretty if you lost weight".

Oh, okay.

I guess it implies that the full version of that sentence is "you've got a pretty face... and the rest of you would be pretty too if you weren't fat."

Or it's a not very subtle suggestion that you'd be even prettier if you lost weight.

I can see where the implications are, but I truly don't mean it that way. :( I just think some people have beautiful faces.

I'm the same way. You can avoid the unfortunate implications by just saying that someone is beautiful or pretty, no mention of their face needed.

Yeah, don't say that comment to an overweight woman. You might not think so, but you'll sound like a complete ass.

also, NEVER ask an overweight person how their diet is going. If it's going well we will tell you. If it's not or we're not on one we don't want to talk about it.

Because by specifically saying they have a "pretty face", instead of just saying that they're pretty, it's basically implying that the rest of them isn't pretty because they're fat.

Seriously, if you want to compliment a larger woman on her looks, just call her pretty.
