I would be on the side of your coworkers and boss - I mean I can understand being upset at a celebrity's death, but it would be a sign of some sort of instability for that to exhibit itself in such a big way at work.

I get what you're saying, but my take is that sometimes people have an "exaggerated" reaction to a celebrity death because that celebrity resonates for them as an archetype. I think that explained some of the public reaction to the death of Princess Diana, for example. She was the Wounded Healer, a kind of secular saviour figure, so her death hit a lot of people as doubly tragic.

Not to mention, that sometimes a celebrity dying is cathartic for previous grief that was bottled up.

It's like you finally have permission to be sad in public.
