Haven't watched it yet, would you recommend watching it in tandem with the Borgias (which I also haven't watched)?

What would you say are some key issues (I want to see the good stuff, so don't tell me those things!)

Ohhhh, in tandem with the Borgias? I'd say sure. Marco Polo is only one season so far, but I feel like it has a lot of potential, and you could probably use it to break things up if you binge on the Borgias -- I love that show, but goodness was it angsty as hell!

I don't think these are spoiler-y, but some key issues...

I'd say portrayal of women. There seems to be an argument whether or not it' positive or negative. Some people think one of the characters as oversexualized, while at the same time others see it as weaponized sexuality? So that would be entirely up to how you end up interpreting it. What I love about the portrayal of women though, is how they interact with each other.

Another issue is use of language, as the show uses English as what the audience hears and doesn't subtitle it when characters speak other languages. Which is weird.

Some people think the action is too exaggerated, too in the vein of Kung Fu movies to be on a historical/period piece.

Also, the title character of Marco Polo can be considered "dull", and since he's more of an observer, they think another character should have been given title. But honestly, the show does go heavily into other storylines that don't involve him so I don't blame them, but I don't really mind.

Thanks!

I think the action scenes might put me off a bit, but if the storyline are good, then I'll stick with it. I haven't ever seen the Borgias, so maybe I'll check it out. I had no idea it was against. :)
