ALSO Thank you for your last lines! If my prof really goes through with bringing in police and the class ends up interviewed/detained, I am going to make sure I have my phone ready to record for if it gets weird.

Also, just thought of this: check your school's policies on drug testing, because you may not even be required to submit to a test if you don't want to. Cops have to have a "reasonable suspicion" (i.e. driving erratically, weed smell, etc.) to detain, arrest, or search you, and that includes alcohol or drug testing, UNLESS your school can mandate you take one or get expelled.

General advice for interacting with the police: Be polite, courteous, and forget every single word in the English language other than "Am I being detained? I would like to leave," and "I want to contact a lawyer."

I'll I've been able to find on our website or college catalogue is that we can be expelled for sale/possession/being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but nothing about mandatory testing. I'll do some more digging or see if I can get the answer from someone on campus.

Should I actually offer up any of my medical info at first if they're being suspicious while talking to me, or should I start off with the question of if I'm being detained?

If you are comfortable with offering up medical information, definitely go with that first. Anything that makes it less likely that you will be viewed as "resisting arrest" or "interfering with an investigation" is a good thing to do. However, you don't have to say anything other than "these are the drugs I am taking, they were prescribed to me by Doctor $NAME and will be valid until $MONTH." Cooperating and being polite is good; volunteering information that the cop has not specifically asked for is probably not the greatest idea. Remember that you have the right to remain silent, but they absolutely can use anything you say against you.

Start asking if you're being detained if you want out of there, though. I'm a paranoid fuck when it comes to the cops, so my immediate reaction is to shut the fuck up and either make them let me go or arrest me. I am like 99% certain you will be absolutely fine though, especially since none of your drugs are controlled. I really doubt your professor will be able to convince actual police that they need to come loom over his class looking for petty drug offenders anyway.

Seriously, thank you so much. I really couldn't imagine how I'd go about talking to them if it ever really did come to an interview. I do think it's farfetched, but since the guy is involved in forensics, he does have cop buddies -- like, how he threatened to have a forensic lecture during our regular class with special assistance by ~cops~. I hope he's just chestpuffing and threatening to scare those who are doing it before class, and not actually wanting to go through with it. (He's also the only other tenured professor in the department besides the department head. I don't know if that helps him with feeling bold and authoritative.)

I'm comfortable explaining my medical information, but I'll try to keep it as to the point as possible (how you said, "this is what I'm taking etc etc") and not offer up more than they're looking for, and if I think its necessary, I'll start off with the question of being detained if it seems like they're definitely the asshole-y cop buddy thing. :-\
