what about Fleur? The characters in the book itself basically condemned her for being sterotypically girly, but then at the end they were proven completely wrong and basically had to eat humble pie.

Fleur started out as beauty that has it's bad side (she was very snobbish in GoF). I feel I am missing a big chunk of her story because I could never get myself to read HBP, but I have an impression that she improves over time, even in the face of parts of Bill's family disliking her.

Without reading HBP her storyline isn't complete. It's not that she improves, it's that the characters in the series never saw her as she was in the first place. Fleur was always caring and kind, even in GoF. But the cast decided not to look past her Veela-ness(?) and see that. Since the books are from Harry's perspective, we see his biases, but HBP pretty much blows that out of the water and the point is they were wrong about her all along. It's not that she changed in HBP. It's that they'd always been wrong.

Yeah, seconding this. READ HBP. She grows a LOT in the end, and we are proven wrong.

Yes, this. Part of what makes the HP books so interesting and unusual is that Harry is NOT a reliable narrator.
