Terribleness is a mix of the jail and one's behavior in it. No, it's not happy fun times, but it's not supposed to be. It's a punishment. A survivable one.

Don't break yourself keeping him out, but offer him plenty of moral support (letters, visits, etc.) while he's there and once he's out.
