Just adding to the above that there is definitely a Kindle for PC app. It's pretty decent. I also second the suggestion for Calibre; there's a very easy-to-set-up plugin for Calibre that will automatically strip the DRM from Kindle files when you import them into Calibre, which is nifty and means you can then read it on any device you like. (I used to do this before the Kindle app became available for my now-retired Nook Color.)
