He kind of is whining about how he should get a break now, if he's expecting his family to step in with the money to keep him out of jail.

But like it or not, paying the fine is an established method for avoiding jail. The closest parallel to what you're suggesting is if there were no other options and he cried that there should be or that what he did wasn't THAT BAD so there shouldn't be a punishment for him.

Yes, it is an established method for avoiding jail--but instead of having him pay it himself, family members are looking to the OP to pay it for him. Paying your own fine is accepting the consequences of your actions, but looking to others to pay it for you is expecting others to get you out of the trouble you made for yourself.
