Are there any fandom things you thought you hated that it turns out there are exceptions to?

Mine would be ship names. Totally hated them, whether it is the smushed ones or the made up ones. I've always just thought why don't people write the character names out?

Until, that is, discovering the Tolkien fandom. So the ship names are completely hilarious. And I've now realized that I hate ship names unless they make me laugh. If they make me laugh, I'm totally okay with them.

Same until I discovered: AngryBirds for Hawkeye/Bruce, but as a general rule I never use them myself. But some of them are hella amusing.

I don't recall any Tolkien ship names I would be interested in hearing some examples if you know them off the top of your head.

Avengers has some of the easiest to recognize/use.

Though, CSI's were always the most creative to me.

Lets see. There is Angbang (Sauron/Morgoth), Silverfisting (Sauron/Celebrimbor), Feanope (Feanor/Morgoth), and glorified erection (Glorfindel/Ecthelion.

At least, those are the funny ones. There are a few others that are commonly used (Russingon for Maedhros/Fingon) that I don't like because they aren't funny.

I feel the same, but with nicknaming actual celebrities. 90% of the time it isn't a malicious name, it just makes me laugh so if someone I follow legitimately doesn't want to see me poke fun at someone they like I give them a nickname.

"Bennifer" still makes me cringe so hard it causes physical pain.

Stark Spangled Banner (Tony/Steve/Bruce) and Squidwarts (Giant Squird/Hogwarts) are my personal favs.

Those are glorious.

I will always love Clotiris (Cloud/Tifa/Aeris).

I don;t even ship things in Avengers, but "Frostiron" helped me study for a nutrition exam, so I no longer crack on them.

I'm not a fan of the name-smush thing(mostly because all my ships have the worst name-smushes), but I do kind of love the silly ship names people come up with.

BlackHawk for Clint/Natasha, WinterWidow for Bucky/Natasha(though BuckyNat works fine as well), StarBucks/Barnes and Noble for Steve/Bucky, and SpideyPool for Peter/Wade are particular favourites of mine.

Eons ago in the HP fandom there was a thread on someone's journal where everybody was just coming up with the stupidest crackiest ships and names for them they could think of it. It was BRILLIANT.

My personal favorite was Albus/Fletcher/Tonks: Mundumbledora.

It wasn't used much, but I'll always have special fondness for "The Government Took My Toad" (Neville/Luna)

Second person - a friend of mine NAILED it.

The only other second person work I like is I Stand Here Ironing.

I can stand it if it's a short, experimental piece. You can't make me deal with second person in a 20k story, come on that's just cruel.

Um, harem fic, I guess? I stumbled across one I actually liked, so I tried reading some of the harem fics by the folks who liked and commented on that fic, and most of those completely sucked.

Harem is a loopy enough genre as it is. Harem fic sounds pretty bad.

Well, it used to be mpreg but I got over that pretty quickly.

Then, it used to be incest but now all my ships are incesty.

Then it used to be RPF, but I've read some good stuff for that. It helps that I just think of it as original fic with people imagining the characters looking like specific actors. (I stay the hell away from the tinhats though).

I'm kind of afraid where I'll end up in the rabbit hole next.

I was pretty sure I hated A/B/O but then I happened upon one when I was in dire need of a pairing and it turned out to be good. The author explored people who didn't fit the biological determinism, consequences of the caste system in society, and the relationships didn't squick me out. I still hate mpreg though.

I am currently under the thrall of a modern setting/non-magic AU, something I usually avoid at all costs.

TBH I didn't like most fandom things - or at least, I never understood their appeal on a real, visceral level. I was just like, you know, that's fine but I don't know why you'd really go nuts about it.

It turns out, I totally get the appeal of all those things, it just needs to be f/f.

RPS/RPF. I still find it dodgy and don't indulge in it myself, but there's two actors in my fandom who are so gosh-darn cute and have so much fun together and just seem to enjoy each others' company so much, I can't help but see where the people who do are getting it from.
